Curriculum Vitae

Short Biography

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from Otago University, majoring in mathematics, John qualified as a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Actuaries and is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Actuaries.

John started his career with a New Zealand life insurance company undertaking all aspects of life insurance work, before he joined a large consulting actuarial practice and became a partner, gaining experience in the actuarial management and servicing of superannuation schemes.

With that experience John then established an actuarial consulting practice, undertaking significant work for both small and large private sector employers and for Government, including two terms as the Government Actuary. Over time the work extended to include the design, implementation and operation of administration and valuation systems for superannuation schemes and insurance companies.

He assisted the Government in the selection of the initial Master Trust Default Providers for the KiwiSaver Scheme and sat on a panel that was charged with reviewing the performance of those Default Providers.

John has been engaged as an expert witness on matters such as the taxation of capital gains on superannuation investments, taxation of life insurance premiums and loan interest payments, administrator responsibilities in relation to payment of superannuation contributions, distribution of surplus arising from the investments of a superannuation scheme, value of the loss of future earned income, valuation of retirement gratuity and loyalty recognition payments and taxation of the interest on the settlement of a trust.

John is involved in the New Zealand Society of Actuaries, having been a Committee Member, Convenor of Committees and President of the Society. His involvement with Workplace Savings New Zealand (formerly the Association of Superannuation Funds of New Zealand) has also led to committee membership and on two separate occasions to serving as Chairman of that body.
